The Google Pixel 2 smartphone, the sequel to the first-ever Google-designed Android handset, retained it’s ranking of “best smartphone camera ever” out-scoring all other smartphone devices and beating close rivals in the latest DxoMark rankings.
“Highest rated smartphone camera. Again.”
The Pixel 2 (98 DxoMark rating) toppled both the Apple iPhone 8 Plus (94 DxoMark rating) and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (94 DxoMark rating) to produce the best-ever score for a mobile device at DxOMark (“the trusted industry standard for camera and lens image quality”).
Google Pixel 2 Camera Features
- Single 12.2MP f/1.8 rear and single 8MP f/2.7 front cameras
- 4k/30fps video recording
- Optical Image Stabilisation
- New autofocus to reduce blur
- Portrait mode on both front and rear cameras
There is a lot more to taking photos with the Pixel 2 that just a quality sensor and perfect aperture. It’s about the computer technology that goes on behind the scenes. For example, each photo is captured with a burst of shots that are optimised with computational photography to produce a single optimal photo. With no visible shutter lag (!!).
It’s also the great new features, including the improved autofocus and Optical image stabilisation, that really sets this camera phone apart from it’s competitors. And that includes the video capabilities.
Featuring an impressive 4k/30fps (although not the standard of the iPhone’s 4k/60fps) at the rear and 1080p/30fps video at the front. Throw in Optical image stabilisation, resulting in what Google calls “fused” stabilisation, and out pops a smooth and professional-like recording (impressive even in low light!).
Another new feature includes the much-talked-about Portrait mode, that can also be found on the new iPhone models. But, unlike Apple’s duel-camera (Read about Apple’s new IOS11 image format), the Pixel 2 produces Portrait mode with just a single camera, with each pixel inside the smartphone being a duel pixel that detects the scene from two perspectives.
Portrait mode uses computational photography and machine learning to blur the background.
